Lloyd Bright wins watermelon weigh-off

Lloyd Bright took top honors Saturday at the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth’s watermelon weigh-off in Historic Washington Saturday.

Bright, who lives in Arkadelphia, is a son of the late world famous melon grower Ivan Bright of Hempstead County and grew his 233.5 pound melon on the Bright farm near Hope. He received $500 and a ribbon from the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth.

Coming in second place was David Cantrell from Corryton, Tennessee with his 223.5 pound watermelon. He won $300 and a ribbon.

Third place went to another member of the Bright family, Lloyds sister Barbara Jones of Bosier City, Louisiana, who grew her 205 pound melon on the Bright farm in Hempstead County. She won a ribbon and $150.

Honorable Mention was awarded to Paula Fields of Historic Washington who grew her 62.25 watermelon in Columbus. Fields received a ribbon and $50.

The watermelons were weighed behind Town Hall in Washington. There were booths of homemade arts and crafts for sale along with local produce and preserves for sale by the local farmer’s market. Musical entertainment was provided by the Hempstead County Melody Boys.

This was the second GPC sanctioned watermelon weigh-off held in this area.
