HCSO-22-RevolverA Hempstead County man apparently ended up learning the hard way what many of us were taught since we were children. Don’t play with guns.

Corey Turner was injured Saturday night when he was apparently showing of his pistol and dropped it, causing it to discharge, shooting him in the leg.

Turner was enroute to Howard Memorial Hospital in Nashville for his injury at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday, November 2 when Deputy Steven Dunham was dispatched to speak to him about the incident that resulted in what was reported as an accidental shooting.

According to Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton, Deputy Dunham made contact with Turner at Howard Memorial and inquired as to how he was shot. Turner told Dunham that he was at his home on Highway 371 showing his .22 caliber revolver to a friend when he accidentally dropped it. He said the revolver went off, striking him in the leg.

Dunham investigated the incident further and learned that the shooting actually occurred on Hempstead 17. Witnesses told Dunham that Turner came to the house on Hempstead 17, sat down in a chair and pulled a handgun from his right pocket. The witnesses said he began spinning the gun on his index finger before he lost control of it and it hit the floor and discharged, shooting Turner in the leg. Turner then apparently called a friend who picked him up and took him to the hospital in Nashville.
