A Saratoga man was seriously injured Monday night in Fulton after crashing his car into a car wash at high speed.

Marcus Johnson was travelling south into Fulton on Highway 355 west just before 9:50 p.m. Monday, March 3 at a high rate of speed when he appeared to lose control of his gray Honda Accord. According to Trooper Kyle Peek, Johnson’s skid marks showed he travelled 288 feet on the highway after losing control before leaving the roadway. Johnson’s car then jumped the ditch, landing sideways, and crashed into the parking lot of the Mr. Bubbles Car Wash, taking out the car wash sign and a large chunk of the concrete curb. His Accord continued across the parking lot and crashed hard into the central part of the car wash’s structure. Trooper Peek said that from the start of Johnson’s skid marks to where he crashed into the building totaled 376 feet, 16 feet longer than the length of a football field including end zones.

The Honda impacted with so much force that it smashed the driver side door and floor into the center of the car and split apart the floor of the car body on the passenger side. A woman who lived across the road from the car wash said that the car’s impact sounded like an explosion. Johnson, who did not appear to have been wearing his seatbelt and was in the passenger seat of the car, didn’t speak to first responders or medics and didn’t appear to react other than to blink in response to questions.

Medics from Pafford EMS secured Johnson with the help of first responders and deputies and moved him to the ambulance. They transported him to Christus Saint Michael Health System in Texarkana.

Trooper Kyle Peek of the Arkansas State Police investigated the crash with the assistance of Hempstead County Sheriff Deputies Steven Dunham and Kyle Rowe.
