BENEFIT 011

EMMET – Emmet’s Chuck Wagon was packed Saturday evening for a benefit to raise money for Matt Mouser.

Mouser suffers from congenital heart problems and hasn’t been able to work for a couple of months. His wife, Melinda, also has health problems and has been unable to work. The couple has five children.

According to Wanda Mouser, Matt’s mother, the heart condition is a genetic family trait. She said of her brothers and sisters, only one didn’t come down with the problem. She wears a pacemaker to keep her heart properly regulated.

The money raised from the benefit will be used to help pay for medical and living expenses for the family.

Dinner for the benefit consisted of chicken and fish with all the trimmings, including plenty of homemade desserts. Some of the desserts were auctioned off as part of a bake sale. The benefit also included a silent and live auction, with Mike Rogers calling. Auction items included two muzzleloaders, a tablet computer, oil paintings, tools, a saddle, lamps, a home security system, air tank, children’s items, including a remote control helicopter, floral arrangements and a clock, among other. The auction also included a handmade porch glider and fire pit. A quilt was also donated for the auction.

There were also plenty of Valentine’s gifts available, including chocolate covered strawberries, homemade candies and cookies and S’mores truffles.

“We’re here to have a good time,” Wanda Mouser said. “There are lots of families who came to help.” She said everyone in the community was great the way they pitched in to help. Overall, she added, the benefit took a month to plan. She lauded the people of Emmet, saying they donated freely of items and their time to help her son and his family.

Donations continued to come in as the benefit started. People lined up early to get carry out dinners to take home, while the Chuck Wagon remained packed with those staying to dine there and bid on the wide variety of auction items.

“It’s been amazing,” she said.
