Accident

Outside Agency Assist

At approximately 7:01 hours on April 9, Deputy Luke Sorensen was dispatched to the 39-mile-marker of I-30 westbound in reference to a motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, Sorensen observed that the interstate was completely blocked by an eighteen wheeler.  Arkansas State Trooper Busse was already on scene and working the accident.  I assisted her in securing the scene while she completed her investigation and EMS tended to the drivers of the vehicles involved.

Breaking & Entering

On April 9, at approximately 7:05 p.m., Deputy Luke Sorensen and Kyle Malone were enroute to an accident on the interstate. We were then dispatched to a breaking or entering at 3517 Highway 278 West. Deputy Malone contacted Sergeant Daniel Oller of the Hope Police Department, and asked him to stand by at the above-named address until we arrived.

Deputy Sorensen and Malone arrived at the above-named address, and made contact with Sergeant Oller. Sergeant Oller advised that the subject, later identified as Sean Stephenson was being aggressive towards him, and also lied to him about his identity.

Deputies made contact with then property owner Mary Fuller, and informed Mary of the situation, and asked her if there was anyone that was supposed to be on the property. She stated that no one was supposed to be on the property.  While speaking with Mary Deputies observed that the door to the storage building had what appeared to be a partial shoe print on it.

Deputy Sorensen and myself then made contact with Allen Bohanon, the complainant. Bohanon stated that Stephenson came over to his residence at 3516 Highway 278 West, and was in his garage looking through his belongings. Bohanon stated that he asked Stephenson what he was doing, and Stephenson stated to Bohanon he was looking for his keys. Bohanon said he told Stephenson he did not think his keys were in there. Bohanon stated Stephenson walked around his car, and picked up some sticks, broke them, and started hitting himself over the head with them. Bohanon stated Stephenson went back across Highway 278 West to 3517 Highway 278 West, and entered a storage building on the property. Bohanon stated Stephenson came out of the building with a box, and put it in the back of his pickup truck.

Deputies went back to 3517 Highway 278 West and looked in the back of Stephenson’s 2001 maroon Dodge Ram pickup truck. they observed two boxes in the back of the vehicle. One of the boxes had assorted paint bottles, a glass jar, a medal and cork lid, and an assortment of papers with one having Billy Wayne Fuller’s name on it. Billy Fuller is Mary’s Fuller’s son. The other box had an assortment of livestock show lapel pins, two fingernail files, a pair of scissors, and a glass jar of assorted ammunition.

Deputies made contact with Stephenson and asked him what he was doing in the storage building, and he stated he was looking for his keys. Deputies asked Stephenson who gave him permission to enter the storage building, and he stated no one.  While speaking with Stephenson, deputies could smell the odor of intoxicants coming from him.  Deputies asked him how much he had drank today and he refused to tell me, stating “I’ve already answered that question”

Deputies placed Stephenson under arrest for Breaking or entering, Criminal Trespass, Criminal Mischief 2nd, Obstructing Governmental Operations, and Public Intoxication. He was transported to the HCDF to await a first court appearance.

Officer Assist

Outside Agency

At approximately 11:29 p.m. on April 9, Deputy Sorensen was requested to assist Hope Police Officer Halliday with a domestic disturbance at 208 East Avenue B.  While enroute he was advised there was a black male attempting to beat in the door of the house.

Upon arrival, Deputy Sorensen observed a black male, later identified as Derrell Wyrick, walking towards the edge of the porch.  Deputy Malone and Officer Halliday identified themselves and told him to stop.  Officer Halliday told him several times to stop and talk with him. Wyrick stepped off the side of the porch and started running towards the rear of the house.

Officer Halliday, Deputy Malone, and Sorensen then pursued Wyrick on foot. As Deputy Sorensen came around the corner of the house he heard a loud noise and heard Officer Halliday state Wyrick had just pushed through the back door of the residence.

Deputies made entry to the residence while still in pursuit of the suspect.  they pursued Wyrick into a bedroom where Officer Halliday told him several times to get on the ground.  Wyrick failed to comply so Officer Halliday attempted to gain control of Wyrick’s right hand.  Wyrick attempted to pull away from Officer Halliday. Deputy Sorensen was able to gain control of his left hand and grabbed him around the shoulders and assisted him to the ground.  Wyrick tried to stay up and we fell into the door of the bedroom and we were then able to place Wyrick in the prone position. Wyrick still tried to push up while Deputy Malone and Officer Halliday attempted to gain control of his hands again to place him in handcuffs. Officer Halliday placed Wyrick in handcuffs and stood him up. As Deputy Malone and Officer Halliday walked Wyrick out of the house he repeatedly attempted to pull away from them. When being placed in Officer Halliday’s patrol vehicle, Wyrick attempted to push away and put his feet on the car in an attempt to push back.  Deputies and officers managed to place him in the back of Officer Halliday’s patrol car. Officer Halliday conducted his investigation of the incident while Deputy Malone and Sorensen stood by.

Suspicious Vehicles

On April 9, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Deputy Malone was dispatched to 108 Hempstead 1305 in reference to suspicious vehicles.

Upon arrival, he made contact with the caller. Caller stated since noon a green Jeep with a trailer, a white four-door Chevrolet truck, a white four-door car, and a red car have passed by his residence at least 10 times.   He stated that the driver of the red car was a white female that had a white male in the passenger seat. caller would not provide any names to any of the individuals involved.

Medical Emergency

At approximately 4:28 p.m., on April 9, Deputy Sorensen was dispatched to Highway 29 South in reference to a medical emergency.

Upon arrival, He made contact with caller who stated that she was having trouble breathing and needed to go to the hospital.  Pafford EMS arrived on scene and transported the caller to Wadley ER in Hope.

Suspicious Person

On April 9, at approximately 8:30 a.m., Deputy McBride was dispatched to Hempstead 224 in reference to a suspicious person. Upon arrival, he spoke with the caller who stated that a white male in his 20’s to early 30’s was asleep in a red SUV with a Texas license plate.

Caller stated he knocked on the window and woke the white male, later identified as Joshua York. Caller stated that he told YOrk to leave the property; and when York started backing up, he almost hit his wife.

Caller stated he then took his 9mm pistol and told York to stop. Caller stated York attempted to turn around and hit a tree three times. Caller stated York traveled East on a four-wheeler trail.

Deputy Mc Bride tracked the vehicle on the four-wheeler trail approximately three-quarters of a mile. McBride located a red Dodge Durango with Texas license plate which had a flat on the passenger rear tire and was stuck in a hole. Deputy McBride cleared the vehicle and contacted dispatch for the next wrecker on rotation. Dispatch advised that B and B Wrecker Service would be in route.  McBride ran a license on the Texas tag however, The Texas system was down at the time.

B and B Wrecker arrived on scene and loaded the vehicle and Deputy McBride followed the wrecker to B and B’s shop on East Third Street. While doing an inventory on the vehicle, he observed an unopened Iphone 5 box, a Samsung tablet and two credit cards. One of the credit cards belonged to Todd Alley and the other to James K Lenorman.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., Deputy Mc Bride was dispatched back to Hempstead 224 in reference to York being at the caller’s residence. Deputy Mc Bride made contact with York and took him into custody.

Deputy McBride transported York to the Hempstead County Detention Center. While in route to the detention center, York stated he ran from everyone because he was tweaking out. York stated he had smoked methamphetamine on April 8. York appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of first contact. York is being charged for public intoxication and criminal trespass with a court date of May 15.

This incident is still under investigation.

Alarm Call

At approximately 2:26 a.m. on April 9, Sgt. Jim Bush was dispatched to 3081 Highway 32 North in reference to an alarm.

Upon arrival. Bush checked the building. All windows and doors were secure. Dispatch advised me that the RP would not be coming out.

Stolen Vehicle Recovery,

Pursuit

On April 9, at approximately 12:41 a.m., dispatch received a call about Spencer Bacon driving a wanted person driving a stolen vehicle by 108 Hempstead 155.

Deputy Kyle Malone went to the Methodist Church in Springhill, and set up in the parking lot with my patrol unit blacked out. Malone observed a silver vehicle matching the description of the car Bacon was supposed to be driving, traveling at a high rate of speed headed East towards the intersection of Highway 355 West and 174 South. Deputy Malone radioed Sergeant Jim Bush that and told believed I had the vehicle we were looking for. Deputy Malone got behind the vehicle as it turned North on Highway 174 South. The vehicle then sped up to a high rate of speed. I attempted to catch up to the vehicle, but was unable to do so. Malone estimated his speed at more than 100 miles per hour.

Deputy Malone radioed Sergeant Daniel Oller of the Hope Police Department when the suspect vehicle was approaching the Soccer Fields on Highway 174 South. Sergeant Oller stated over the radio that he clocked Bacon’s speed with his radar at 105 miles per hour. When the suspect vehicle passed the Soccer Fields Sergeant Oller and Sergeant Daniel Stewart initiated their emergency lights and sirens and pursued the vehicle North on Springhill Road.

After Sergeant Oller and Stewart pursed the vehicle through Hope. It pulled into the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office where Sergeant Oller, Stewart, Officer Hunter Halliday, Officer Allen Young, Sergeant Bush, and Malone conducted a felony traffic stop on the vehicle.

Bacon was taken into custody at approximately 12:55 a.m., and transported by Sergeant Bush to the Hempstead County Detention Center.

Sergeant Oller filled out an impound log for the vehicle while Malone stood by with the vehicle while Blevins Wrecker service towed it.
