Harp singing coming to Washington

WASHINGTON – An all-day Sacred Harp Singing will be held in Washington, Arkansas on Saturday, May 20. The singers will meet at and sing in the historic Washington Methodist Church located at 124 Highway 195 South, Washington, Arkansas. It will begin at 9:30 A.M. and conclude around 3 P.M.


Sacred Harp singing is a form of singing that was developed in the 19th century to teach people how to sing. The singing is all done acapella without the use of musical instruments. It is a unique singing style that is still practiced throughout the South. It is very likely that it was practiced in the Ark-La-Tex region around in the early 19th century by different church groups. More information on Sacred Harp singing can be found at www.fasola.org.
