NC Fair begins Thursday

PRESCOTT – This will be the 80th consecutive year for Nevada County to host a fair.
With this being the fact, the theme of the 20187 Nevada County Fair is, “Happy Birthday”. This year’s fair runs from Sept. 8-17, kicking off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, with the annual Queen’s Coffee at the Nevada County Library.
Friday will be a day for entering items in the arts and crafts divisions, while Saturday will see a new event, “Taste of Nevada County” from 10-1:30 a.m. Contestants in this event can set up at their convenience, but judging will be done on BBQ, coleslaw, baked beans and potato salad. Judging will occur at noon. Doors will open for the event at 1 p.m. so the public can come in and sample the wares offered as well. The cost will be $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. This will be followed by the Power Wheel Darby at 3 o’clock and the Talent Show at 6 p.m.
Educational and commercial booths will be set up Sunday from 3-5 p.m. after the gospel singing at 2.
On Monday, entries can be made in arts, crafts, photography, quilts, household articles, food preservation, fall gardens, field crops and furniture. Educational and commercial booths can also be set up at this time, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday will also be the day chickens are checked in and tested.
Items in the aforementioned categories can still be entered from 7:30-10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12, including items for the flower show. Exhibits will be judged at 11 a.m., with lunch for the judges at noon. Livestock (cattle, swine, sheep and goats) can be entered from noon-8 p.m. The parade is set for 6 p.m. and will start at Central Baptist Church with participants lining up at 5:15 p.m. This year’s route will go to the Prescott City Park. Exhibit halls will be open at 6 o’clock as well, with livestock weigh-in at 8.
Wednesday sees the exhibit halls open from 5-9 p.m. and the livestock show at 6 o’clock.
One of the big days will be Thursday, with the premium buyer’s meal at 5:30 p.m., followed by the premium sale at 6:30. In addition, the pageants for infant through petite categories will be held at 6 p.m. in the Potlatch building.
Friday sees the exhibit buildings open from 5-9 p.m. and poultry and rabbit shows judged.
The fair, for all intents and purposes, wraps up Saturday with the exhibit buildings open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. There will be a pet costume contest at 6 p.m. along with the pageants for the categories of Young, Junior and Queen in the Potlatch building. The rodeo will be held at 7 p.m. and livestock released at 9 o’clock.
All items can be picked up from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The deadline for entering the pageants is Sept. 8. According to Stacy Jester, pageant coordinator, there has already been a record number of entrants with 36 for the various divisions. The divisions for the pageants are as follows: infant 0-11 months; baby 12-23 months; tiny 2-4 years; little 4-6 years; and petite 7-9 years. For Saturday’s pageants, the breakdown is: young 10-12 years; junior 13-16 years and miss 17-21.
This year’s rodeo will cost $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. This year’s events will include: mutton bustin’, mini bull riding, stick horse barrels, a stick horse contest, egg toss, boot scramble with two age divisions and a calf scramble, also with two age groups.
There is no entry fee for the pet costume contest and youngsters are encouraged to bring their favorite pet and to dress alike. The age groups for this will be 4 and under; 5-8; 9-13 and 14-19. Winners will be named in the most creative and most unusual costume categories.
There should be something for pretty much everyone at this year’s fair.
