Wolves drop Hornets, 41-20

PRESCOTT – It took a while for the Wolves to get on track, but once the team did, it rolled to a 41-20 win over Camden Harmony Grove Friday night.

The Wolves are now 2-0 on the young season and will be making the short trip to Hope on Sept. 15 for a date with the Bobcats.

Weather for Friday night’s game was unseasonably cool with temperatures dropping into the low 60s by the end of the game. There were no complaints from fans as the second game of the season is usually hot and muggy.

Prescott won the toss and deferred to the second half. Camden fielded the ball on its 33 where the runner was stopped. On the first play, the Hornets fumbled with Prescott recovering at the Camden 37 with 11:42 showing in the first.

It looked as though the Wolves would be moving in for a quick score, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, three of the first four possessions by the two squads resulted in turnovers. Cade Haynie went to the air for Bailey Adams on first down, but was picked off with the ball returned to the Hornet 32.

The pick didn’t matter as Camden punted after four plays, with the ball rolling dead at the Prescott seven with 9:24 left in the opening period.

The Wolves drove the length of the field, getting to the Hornet 13 when Haynie was picked off for a second time. Thomas Muldrew and MyKal Burns carried the load on the drive.

It was three and out for the Hornets, with the punt fielded by Muldrew at the Prescott 22 and returned to the 41. This time, the Prescott offense, for the most part, hit on all cylinders, driving 59 yards in seven plays, recovering a fumble in the process. The score came on a 34-yard pass from Muldrew to Derrick Nolen with 2:10 left in the first. The point after gave Prescott a 7-0 lead.

After the kick, Camden took over at its 32, wound up losing a yard in four plays and turned the ball over on downs.

An incomplete pass started the drive, before Haynie found Cameron Cox who fought his way to the Hornet 3 as the first period came to an end.

Muldres capped the drive with a score on the first play of the second period. However, the PAT was no good. Prescott led, though, 13-0 with 11:55 left in the half.

The kick ended up in the end zone, putting the ball on the 20. The Hornets got to the Camden 31 before having to punt. The punt rolled dead at the Prescott 35 with 9:52 showing.

Burns broke loose to the Hornet 48 on the first play before Muldrew found an opening and scampered in for six more. Again, the PAT was no good, but Prescott’s lead had increased to 19-0 with 9:35 left on the clock.

Camden’s offense came alive in the next drive. The Hornets went with a loaded backfield and no receivers and basically ran the ball down the throat of the Prescott defense. The drive started at the Hornet 43 and took 11 plays. Prescott was hit with an offside penalty on the point after attempt, with Camden opting to go for two. The attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the score 19-6 with 5:30 left.

Jordan Glass called for a fair catch on the short kickoff, with Prescott taking over at its 32. Eight plays later, Burns took it in from four-yard out. The Wolves decided to go for two and were successful, making the score 27-6 with 3:07 left in the half.

Ordinarily this would only leave time for one drive. However, Camden went three and out, punting to the Prescott 36 with 1:36 on the clock.

Haynie went to the air, completing three consecutive passes, moving the Wolves to the Hornet 19 before Muldrew took it in. The PAT was wide, but, with 59 seconds left, the Wolves led 33-6.

Camden took over at its 31, lost three yards on first down, gained them back on the second snap and let the clock run out. It was a slow half, taking almost an hour and 20 minutes to complete. The same couldn’t be said for the second half.

Prescott received to get things started in the third quarter. Ka’Darius Pearson fielded the kick at the nine and returned it to the 19 where the Wolves set up shop. Prescott drove to the Hornet 25 before turning the ball over on downs at the 31 with 8:49 to go in the frame.

It was three and out for the Hornets. With the punt going to the Prescott 32.

Prescott only needed two plays to put the game on ice. Haynie missed connection with Muldrew on first down, but found Cox, who battled his way 68-yards for the score. A two-point conversion put the Wolves up by 35 and invoked the mercy rule.

Prescott substituted heavily the remainder of the game, allowing the Hornets to make the game look closer than it really was. Camden scored on its next two drives to cut the lead to 41-20.

Prescott did have two possessions in the fourth quarter, punting on the first with the Hornet scoring on its only possession of the period. The final score came with 4:51 left in the contest.

The kick was fielded at the two by Nolen, who returned it to the 36. One more block and he would have had a 99-yard touchdown run. It didn’t matter as the Wolves let the clock run out by taking knees on two snaps.

Prescott’s non-conference schedule will end next Friday night as the Wolves head to Hope for a date with the Bobcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
