PRESCOTT – There was a packed house at the Potlatch Building Saturday evening for the annual Piney Woods Chapter of the Friends of the NRA Banquet.

More than 200 people were on hand for the event, with most purchasing chances to win weapons or items in the silent auction. Several thousand dollars were raised with the money to be used to support local school shooting sports.

However, only a select few were eligible to compete for the NRA gun of the year, a Daniel Defense M4 Carbine V7 5.56mm NATO rifle. Only those fortunate enough to obtain a Schrade skinning and pocket knife combo were entered in the drawing. The chances of winning were 1:13. Three of the knives were raffled off, with the rest auctioned off. In the end, though, there was only one winner.

Don Honea was the auctioneer for the event, working the crowd to bid as much as possible to help raise money for area school shooting sports. One of the items sold was an African safari for four for $1,000, however, airfare and lodging weren’t included. Four pieces of luggage, one containing one of the gun of the year knives, went for $1,600. A “Pledge of Allegiance” plaque was auctioned off for $125 and presented to the oldest veteran there. It went to Rex Hildebrand.
