HOPE – The Hope Lions Club heard from Blevins Elementary Principal Lisa Doss on a state-wide program called “R.I.S.E. Arkansas.”

The program is through the Arkansas Department of Education and stands for “Reading Initiative for Student Excellence”. Doss noted that only 31% of Arkansas fourth graders are proficient in reading; since Blevins has instituted the program, they’ve seen their numbers rise to over 50% in their 4th graders.

The program aims to increase the number of students in grades 3 through 8 who meet the ACT Aspire reading readiness benchmark by 10% within three years. The program also aims to create a culture of reading in Arkansas.

Doss asked the Lions to partner with Blevins on the project and the club voted to consider it at their next board meeting. At least one Lion volunteered to help with the project in the Blevins Schools.image
