Ice, ice baby – Wolves chill Devils, 48-0

GURDON – Penalties were the only thing slowing Prescott down Friday night as the Wolves dismantled the Gurdon Go-Devils 48-0.

This puts the Wolves at 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in 6AAA play, while the Devils drop to 2-3 and 0-2. This was also the second consecutive shutout by the Wolves.

The game was never close. Prescott won the toss and deferred. The kick was returned to the 20, but it was three and out for the Devils with the punt not making it out of Gurdon territory.

Prescott took over at the Gurdon 49 and scored in five plays. The touchdown came on a 15-yard pass from Cade Haynie to Thomas Muldrew with eight minutes left in the first. The extra point made it 7-0 and the Wolves never looked back.

The next kick went into the end zone for a touchback, again giving Gurdon the ball on its 20.

The Devils appeared to be mounting a drive getting into Prescott territory before a high snap sailed over the quarterback’s head and was recovered back at the Gurdon 21. The end result is the drive stalled and Gurdon punted to the Prescott 48.

Haynie went to the air finding Ka’Darius Pearson at the Gurdon 40. Muldrew broke free to the Devil 22 and the drive ended with Haynie going in from 22-yards out. The PAT made it 14-0 and ended scoring in the first period.

Prescott was hit with an offside call on the kick, moved back five yards and Bernardo Gonzalez booted the ball away. It was returned to the Gurdon 30.

It didn’t matter as it was three and out for the Devils with the punt making it to the Wolf 48.

Haynie missed his next two passes, but MyKal Burns rambled to the Gurdon 25. The first period ended with Prescott getting hit with a holding call and the ball moved to the 35.

Period two saw Haynie miss connection with Cameron Cox on second down, but find Muldrew for six on the next play. The PAT made it 21-0.

Prescott attempted an onside kick, only to see the Devils recover at the Gurdon 47. The Devils managed to get to the Wolf 24 before the drive stalled and the ball was turned over on downs.

Haynie hit Cox for a gain of 12 to the 36 only to see the gain wiped out by a holding call. His next attempt to Pearson was incomplete and on second down an altercation broke out stopping play for several minutes while officials and authorities sorted everything out. When all was said and done, Gurdon was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and the ball was placed on the Devil 44. Four plays later Burns went in from the 20, only to have the score called back on a holding penalty. Undaunted, Haynie found Pearson who scored. The extra point put the Wolves up 28-0 with 7:28 left in the half.

The kick went into the end zone again, with Gurdon starting at its 20, where it was three and out once again. Muldrew returned the punt to midfield with 5:37 showing.

The Wolves lost 15 quick yards on two penalties, first for holding, then for procedure. This moved the ball back into Prescott territory. The Wolves weren’t slowed in the least as Burns broke loose to the Gurdon 37 before Haynie hit Muldrew at the 15. Haynie found Chase Subin who fought to the goal line before being stopped just short. Two plays later Muldrew scored and the PATmade it 35-0.

Gurdon started at its 25 with 3:50 left in the half. The Devils gained four on a first down screen but saw Derriun Thompson pick off the second down pass for a touchdown. The PAT put the Wolves up 42-0 and ensured the second half would be played under the mercy rule.

Gurdon managed to get to midfield before turning the ball over on downs. However, the Devils were unable to run out the clock and Prescott had 0.04 seconds, or time for one snap.

The ball went to Isiah Wayne who broke loose and almost scored, but was stopped at the 15.

Having deferred in the first half, Prescott got the ball to start the third quarter. The kick went out of bounds with the Wolves taking over at the Prescott 35.

Jaydon Riley broke loose and made it to the Gurdon 23 on the second play of the period as the first was an incomplete pass. He carried a second time and lost the ball at the three with Gurdon recovering. It was the first of two drives to end in fumbles for the Wolves.

The Devils made it to the Gurdon 40 before going backwards to the 26 and punting to the 49.

Prescott had the ball two plays before coughing it up again at midfield.

Gurdon ran two plays, gaining two yards as the third period ended. The Devils managed to get to the Prescott 36 before being picked off a second time.

Prescott started on its 34. Peters hit Kylin Haynie for a gain of nine, before Riley made it to the 47. Two incomplete passes later saw the Wolves facing third and 10 from the Prescott 47. Riley found a gap and rambled 53 yards for the final score of the game. The point after was no good, leaving it 48-0.

Next week the Wolves will host the Horatio Lions in Prescott’s homecoming game. Homecoming festivities kick off at 6:30 p.m. with kickoff set for 7 o’clock.

From there, the Wolves will have back-to-back games on the road as Prescott travels to Glen Rose on Oct. 13 and to Benton Harmony Grove on Oct. 20. The Wolves’ final home game of the year will be on Oct. 27 against Bismarck, with the season ending Thursday, Nov. 2 on the road to Jessieville.
