HOPE – On March 22 at approximately 9 a.m., Deputy Rowe was dispatched to Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives 201 Highway 195 South in reference to stolen property.

Upon arrival, he made contact with Melissa Nesbitt the Manager of the Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives (SARA) in Washington.  She reported at least 21 items of historical literature and Confederate currency that had been removed from SARA in Washington. Nesbit stated she located these items in Little Rock.

Nesbitt identified these items, the Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives had marked them with a manuscript number.  She stated she had observed that number on all the items she had seen in Little Rock. Nesbitt stated she was looking on the Internet searching  an Archive Center in Little Rock and noticed some property (Confederate twenty dollar bill and numerous civil war letters) that were supposed to be in Old Washington. Nesbitt stated she went to search for the property and found that all of it was missing. She stated someone could have stolen the property from 2011 to now.

Nesbitt stated there are markings on the twenty-dollar bill and every letter that they have made to show the property is from Old Washington and she could see every marking on each letter and the bill. She stated she has all of the pictures and markings to show that they own the property.

Investigators are still trying to determine a value on the missing items.

The Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office has asked the Aransas State Police Criminal Investigation Division for assistance in the theft.

Theft

On Friday, March 23, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Deputy Brown received a call from the police dispatcher in reference to a theft that already occurred, located at 275 Hempstead 278, also known as Tyson Foods, in Hope, Hempstead County.

Upon arrival he met with Leticia Chavarria who stated somebody stole $7,000 out of her locker at work. She stated the money was her income tax money and she had it in her bag she put inside the locker. She stated the locker was locked she’d taken some money out of her locker at 4 p.m., when she got off work a little later all of the money was missing.

Residential Burglary Arrest

Billy Jo Sharp, 30, of Hope, was arrested by HCSO investigators on March 27, in connection with a residential burglary and theft that occurred on March 23, at 14 Hempstead 23. A parole hold was also placed on Sharp. He is being held with no bond.

On March 23, at approximately 3:46 p.m., Gary McCrory stated he came to his storage house and noticed someone had pushed in the front door of the storage house. He stated when he went inside and discovered two of his KD socket sets was stolen from his toolbox, he placed the value at $170 apiece.

McCrory stated two of his new ladder sticks in a box was stolen from the back bedroom and they worth $69 apiece. Gary stated his Midland CB radio with a 200 watt power inverter worth $500 was stolen along with his Cobra 60 channel CB worth $130.

Investigators recovered several stolen items during the investigation.
