Arrington named principal at NSD

ROSSTON – Jason Arrington has been named the new K-12 principal for the Nevada School District.

This was done in a special called meeting of the Nevada School Board Wednesday, April 4. The need arose when Michael Odom accepted a job as principal at Arkansas High School in Texarkana.

An interview team talked about what the district needed in a principal and began conducting interviews accordingly. In the end, the committee decided Arrington was a good fit for the district.

Arrington told the committee and board he appreciated the confidence he’s being shown, saying he’s invested in the community and will work to help students succeed.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Arkansas University in 193, and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2001. He obtained his Master of Arts in Teaching from SAU in 2011.

Arrington was Dean of Students at Smackover High School, taught business, education and technology at SHS and was the Dena of College and Career Readiness at SHS. He also taught at Strong High School.

However, his career hasn’t always been in education. Arrington was a special projects coordinator with Anthony Forest Product in El Dorado, a wildlife officer with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, a deputy with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and the Nevada County Deputy Coroner.

In other business, the board was reminded testing season is rapidly approaching and teachers have gone through the required in-service to know what is required. Superintendent Rick McAfee said the district is looking forward to a good testing season.

The board also amended the 2018-19 school calendar because of unexpected conflicts. Next year’s prom will be a week earlier than scheduled and be held on April 19. This is because the district track meet is scheduled for the week of April 26 when the prom was originally planned. Next year’s graduation may also have to be moved because of end of course AP History exams. McAfee said there is no recommendation for this yet, and it will be addressed at the board’s May meeting when more is known.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 24.
