BLEVINS – It’s time for the 32nd Blevins Arkansas Children’s Hospital fundraiser.

This year’s event will be held Saturday, May 5, at the Blevins school cafetorium. Dinner will be served at 4 p.m. with the cake auction set for 7 o’clock. There will be plenty of other items to be auctioned off as well.

Don Honea is spearheading the event, once again. He said this is the 32nd year for this fundraiser, which is the longest consecutive one in the state for the ACH. To date, the event has raised and donated more than $300,000 to ACH, and 100 percent of money raised at the event goes to the hospital. This, Honea said, is because all of the food and auction items are donated by area businesses and churches.

The price has remained the same since its inception – $5 for adults and $2.50 for children under 12. The menu has pretty much remained the same as well: BBQ brisket, pork, chicken, baked beans, potato salad, slaw, dessert and a drink. Honea said volunteers will cook 250 pounds of brisket, 100 pounds of pork and 15 boxes of chicken.

Once again, the Bear Creek Boys will be on hand providing entertainment for those who decide to stay and eat. Patrons can either dine in or get take out. It’s not unusual to see people carrying out several bags filled with trays of food to take home to their families.

Not only is it an inexpensive meal, but it’s for a good cause.

Honea said the project began when two local children had to go to ACH. Their grandparents wanted to give back to the hospital and started the fundraiser. Now, 32 years later, it’s still being held, helping to make sure children get the best possible medical care.

Honea said they’re looking for a big crowd again this year. Normally, the cafeteria is packed from start to finish with people visiting, eating and just having a good time, while helping out a worthy cause.
