March is Nevada County’s birthday month. The county was created March 20, 1871.

Please consider celebrating the occasion by giving county history a gift: Your membership in the Nevada County Depot & Museum. The Depot needs your support as it prepares for the county’s 150th birthday in 2021.

And for ongoing projects such as acquisition, preservation and interpretation of the county’s 1864 Civil War battlefields; display of the Prescott & Northwestern caboose; and museum exhibits at the Depot. Basic annual membership is only $15, but the Depot welcomes all donations.

In partnership with the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office, fundraising continues for purchasing 808 acres on Prairie D’Ane — or De Ann, the name most of us grew up with. (Historians have documented the older, French-ier spelling.) This acquisition has received substantial pledges from national, state and area organizations but $90,000 is still needed. A combination of national, state and local funds helped acquire 448 acres at Elkins Ferry last year. It is hoped that the needed Prairie D’Ane total can be reached by the next battle anniversary in April.

The battlefields at Prairie D’Ane, Elkins Ferry and Moscow are part of the Camden ExpeditionNational Historic Landmark, which explains the interest of major donors such as the Civil War Trust and the American Battlefield Protection Program. If you want to know more about the fundraising or have questions, contact Depot board president Jeremy Dickerson, 826-4850, or Mark Christ with the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, 501-324-9886.

But, as much as donations, the projects need strong local support. The Depot needs memberships and wants the community’s involvement.
