On Wednesday February 15th, 27 fifth and sixth grade students at Garrett Memorial Christian School became the first students to graduate from the 10-week DARE program taught by the Hempstead County Sheriff's Office. Students received DARE tee-Shirts and a certificate of completion from DARE officer Deputy Marla Barnhill.

Six students were recognized for essays they wrote about what they had learned during the 10-week course. Sheriff James Singleton and Prosecuting Attorney Christi McQueen presented the essay winners with a DARE medal and a Hempstead County Sheriff's badge pin. Each student read their essay to the other students and parents that were present.

The essay winners were; Richard Key 5th grade, Courtney Rook 6th grade, Sarah Campbell 5th grade, Jerri Harris 5th Grade, Jillian Woodruff 5th grade, and Hannah Lloyd 5th grade.

The students presented Deputy Barnhill with a plant and thank you cards that they made to show their appreciation.

In addition to Garrett Memorial Christian School, the Hempstead County Sheriff's Department is presenting the DARE program at Saratoga, Spring Hill and Blevins schools this year.
