Hempstead County Election Results

Hempstead County retained its current Sheriff and Collector and County Clerk but voted down a quarter-cent sales tax earmarked for economic development in election results from Tuesday.

Unofficial results complete but for a few “provisional” ballots showed incumbent County Clerk Karen Smith defeating challenger Nicolas Ward 3,532 to 1,064.  Incumbent Sheriff James Singleton defeated challenger Keith Sullivan 2,429 votes to 2,210 votes.

In the vote on the proposed quarter-cent sales tax earmarked for economic development, Hempstead County voters soundly rejected the proposed tx with 2,981 votes against and 1,542 votes for.

In the Hempstead County portion of State Senate District 4 Incumbent Jimmy Hickey polled 453 votes compared to 212 for Lonny M. Goodwin.

In other contested races in Hempstead County, long-time District 3 JP Doris Brown defeated challenger Doug Storey 142 to 50.

In the race for Spring Hill School Board Position #3, Caleb Askew polled 276 votes compared to 119 for Jacob Jones and 71 for David C. Tuttle.

In the Governor’s race, Hempstead County went heavily for Sarah Huckabee Sanders 3,305 compared to 1,312 for Chris Jones.  In the other statewide races, Hempstead County overwhelmingly voted for the Republican candidates.

Hempstead voted against all 4 of the issues on the ballot.  The only vote that was close was issue #3, the issue guaranteeing religious freedom.  Hempstead County voted 2,282 against to 2,264 for.

There were a total of 4,750 ballots cast in Hempstead County.
