Hempstead County girl attacked by pit bull

By Kevin McKinnon, 12/17/12 12:02 PM

pitbullA five-year-old Hempstead County girl was attacked by a black pit bull Sunday afternoon.

The Hempstead County Sheriff’s Department says Deputy Freddie Parks was called to 372 Highway 299 Sunday around 4:50 p.m. after the young girl had been bitten by the dog.

The girl’s mother took her to Wadley Regional Medical Center in Hope in her car before an ambulance could arrive at the scene.

The mother told Deputy Parks that her daughter had been playing outside in the yard when her grandmother heard her scream.

Deputy Parks observed bite marks on the girl’s head. She was treated and released from the hospital.

The girl’s grandfather shot and killed the dog shortly after the attack.

The mother said the dog had been coming around their residence for several days but hadn’t displayed an aggressive nature prior to the attack. The owner of the dog wasn’t known.

The girl’s mother was advised to take the dog to a veterinarian of her choice to be checked for any disease.
