Jonquil Festival’s Opening Day A Success

OLD WASHINGTON – The opening day of the 2017 Jonquil Festival in Old Washington appeared to be successful, crowd-wise, and even with the roller coaster weather we’ve had, there were still jonquils to be seen.

The music of The Hempstead County Melody Boys resonated throughout the grounds of the festival, and with the nearby food lane close at hand, many were enjoying eating and listening to their music.

On the food lane, almost anything could be found, from alligator to Texas Twisters to homemade root beer.

If you had your fill to eat, there was a bouncy house nearby where  you could bounce those calorie off. However, you could also walk pounds off by negotiating the seemingly endless number of vendor booths.

There really wasn’t much that you couldn’t find amongst the vendors. Pain Relievers (free samples!), handmade furniture, wreaths of all sorts, indoor decor clothing items for big and little and therapeutic massaging insoles. A favorite was a booth showcasing handmade wooden ties for all ages.

One booth of note is that which was manned by authors Talya Tate Boerner and Rhonda G. Williams and their books. The “Dear Old Town Club” book club/social club started on Old Washington in 1872. The club meets on the third Monday of each month, at 4:00pm at the Old Washington Fire Department. “All things Southern” are discussed.

If you missed the Festival today, you have Saturday and Sunday, starting at 9:00am each day. Parking is plentiful and has a charge of $5.00. Admission to the Festival is free.
