Plenty available locally for holidays

PRESCOTT – Though businesses in Prescott may not carry all the items seen on television for Christmas, this doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of reasons for shoppers to spend their money locally this holiday season.

Antiquing is a popular hobby, and Antiques Plus offers a bit of everything for the discerning shopper. Starting with a full-size juke box, complete with 45rpm records, there are also knickknacks, whatnots, jewelry, tools, mirrors, home décor, artwork, books, flatware, compact discs, toys and collectables. In addition, Antiques Plus will be hosting an open house from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1,

It may sound odd, but for gardeners and those who love to putter in the yard, PSE might be the place to shop. What homeowner couldn’t use a fire ant treatment to help control those pesky insects, or maybe a full-fledged pest control treatment for the lawn. Perhaps what’s needed is an herbicide treatment for those irritating weeds nothing else seems to work on. And, let’s not forget about man’s best friend as PSE also offers flea treatments. For those thinking along these lines, gift certificates are available.

The problem with the Hwy. 67 Flea Market may be there’s just too much to choose from. Those making changes in their homes may want to consider a new dining set, or perhaps replacing an old mattress and box spring set, with something offering more support and comfort. Then again, who wouldn’t want to wake up on Christmas morning and find a nice, new recliner waiting for them. While the market offers a lot in the way of furniture, there’s plenty of other items available as well, including tools, knickknacks, curio cabinets, artwork, appliances, rocking chairs, cookware, movies, music and books, along with primitives.

Next up is Family Dollar, where budget-minded shoppers will find plenty of plushies, toys, footballs, planes, trucks, party speakers, movies, dinnerware, foam blocks, decorations, ornaments, games, playing cards, colognes, perfumes, remote control toys, dolls, Nerf items and telescopes.

Moving ahead, Fred’s offers a wide variety of games, larger games, such as basketball, foosball, an air hockey table, dolls, remote control toys, gumball machines, movies, compact discs, pet beds, make up, perfume, colognes, Barbie dolls, plushies, bowling sets, toy power tools for the future handyman out there, pet playpens, action figures, baby toys, footballs, basketballs, soccer balls, activity books and telescopes.

At Dollar General there are also movies, headphones, flashback games (for those who like retro video games from Atari), Lego blocks, toy cars and trucks, decorations, plushies, dolls, train sets, hot wheels, books, clothes and activity books.

Shopping at a truck stop may sound a bit odd, but deals can be found in the strangest places. At TA, for example, those without family or dinner plans on Christmas, can head out for a holiday feast consisting of oven roasted turkey, ham, dressing, homemade mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, vegetables, and the endless soup and salad bar, along with pumpkin pie for dessert for $15.99. On the other side of the business, there are building blocks, dolls, trucks, speakers, headphones, knives, books, whatnots and audio books.

At Love’s there are also dolls, trucks, audio books, plushies, metal machines, a toy tool set, unicorn poppers, glowing build-a-road sets, robots and remote control toys.

While “traditional” gifts may not be found at Mac’s Tire and Home Center, this doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of gift ideas to be found. Again, those who enjoy yardwork can find most of their lawn and garden needs with weedeaters, chainsaws, push mowers and riding mowers. Those redecorating may want to give the handmade furniture a look-see. There are also charcoal grills, appliances, gas and electric heaters, rocking chairs, and weapons can be ordered for sport shooting, hunting and/or home protection.

Now, what’s the holidays without food. After all, most of us tend to overeat during the holidays, but get burned out on turkey and ham. Once the holiday feasting has ended, gift certificates to local restaurants are always welcome as few feel much like cooking.

Ko-Fields not only offers gift certificates, but can be booked as a party location. In addition, those who’d love to serve a homemade pie (but not cook it) can order one in advance.

Casa Carlos also offers gift certificates for those who are tired of holiday fare and are looking for something different.

There’s no real reason not to shop locally this holiday season. Shopping locally helps everybody and provides a boost to the local economy.
