A Texas man captured a picture of this flying squirrel during a Christmas visit to his mother in Cale in Nevada County.

Mike Ridling, says he decided to clean out a small bird house hung on a tree when something darted out of the nest and startled him.

He said he looked up the tree but couldn’t figure out what he was looking at so he got his camera out and attached a zoom lens to take a picture. Ridling says that even with a closer view he wasn’t sure what the critter was. But when he researched it on Google, he discovered that his furry friend was a flying squirrel.

He says that no one he talked to knew they were in this area.

Ridling says he put the squirrel’s nesting material back into the bird house and he later returned to his little home.

Ridling now lives in Rowlett, Texas.

According to Wikipedia, the Southern Flying Squirrel is indigenous to this area. They are rarely seen, especially compared to the numbers of other squirrels.
