Strongman and Guinness record-holder Steve Carrier from the Dallas area is in Hope this week demonstrating his spectacular strength while delivering a positive, up-lifting message at area schools along with three shows for the general public.
Carrier is well known for bending steel, breaking burning blocks, snapping baseball bats, tearing license plates in half, popping soda bottles, tearing phone books apart and rolling frying pans, all with nothing more than teeth, muscle and brute force.
This Wednesday, Thursday and Friday Carrier will be presenting shows at Hope Primary, Beryl Henry Elementary, Hope High School, Spring Hill Elementary and Spring Hill High School. Carrier is expected to present a fun, energetic, educational program putting emphasis on: Anti-Bullying, The Six P's of Character: Be: Polite, Productive, Prepared, Prompt, Positive in Attitude, and Participation. Steve encourages students to participate in Random Acts of Kindness, and Holding Onto Your Dreams and Never Letting Go.
Gary Johnson with Calvary Baptist Church says that this year the Hope Ministerial Alliance is also presenting three of Carrier's shows on the stage at the Hope Fair Park coliseum. Those shows are Friday, Saturday and Sunday night at 7 p.m. and are free to the public.
Last year Carrier appeared at Calvary Baptist Church as part of a revival at the church, along with an appearance at Hope Primary School.
According to his website, Carrier at an early age, was born crippled, having to wear braces on his legs in order to walk, and was told by professionals that he would, “never walk again”. Determined, Steve said, “I will one day be a professional athlete!”
By the time he reached graduation of his high school years, he had become an all conference MVP high-school basketball player earning a 'full-ride' sports scholarship. After playing college basketball, Steve pursued power-lifting and gained 130 lbs of muscle without the use of steroids.
Today, Carrier is a power-lifting champion, and in July 2009, he broke the Guinness Book of World Records by breaking 30 bats over his thigh in 53 seconds!
