In honor of President's Day, the Washington Vintage Dancers are keeping with the tradition by celebrating our first president's birthday with a George Washington Ball on Saturday, February 25th.
Organization member Josh Williams, who serves as the “caller” for the dancers, says the group formed in 2007 to perform 18th and 19th century contra dances. You may have seen them performing at the Watermelon Festival or in the Southwest District Fair Parade.
Williams says the group meets each second and fourth Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Washington Fire Station and new members are always welcome.
He says some people might be inhibited to dancing because they believe a romantic connection is needed. But in contra(community) dancing, he says the whole group participates, changing partners. He says it's a great opportunity to get together and enjoy each other's company while having a good time.
This Saturday's ball is the Washington Vintage Dancers' first fund raiser. Williams says the group will be performing 10 to 15 different dances including The Virginia Reel, The Jefferson Reel and The Gothic Dance.
No prior dance experience is required, according to Williams. And while many of the club's regular members will be in period attire, he says it's certainly not required for guests.
The Ball begins at 7 p.m. Saturday at the BancorpSouth Community Room at 200 South Elm Street in Hope. Refreshment will be provided.
A small admission fee is required to help raise money for further projects by the Washington Vintage Dancers. Single guests are $5 and couples are $8. Children 12 and under are free at the door.
